02.11.12 Bournonville meets competition
November offers a special Ballet evening at the Royal Theatre. Three unique gems, three Danish Masterpieces created by, probably, the three greatest ballet-directors and choreographers in the history of the Royal Ballet: August Bournonville, Harald Lander and Flemming Flindt.
The Conservatoire demonstrates Bournonville's graceful, elegant style. Flemming Flindt's The Lesson follows the dramatic story of a young girl in the hands of an increasingly insane dance teacher. Harald Lander's Etudes is a dazzling display of steps in a classical ballet training session, focusing on one particular ballerina's path to the stage.
It is an evening embracing the daily work in the rehearsal room. Three ballets about the creation of a dancer and presenting scenes from the rehearsal room where no audience usually is allowed. For the first time, these three masterpieces are performed in the same program, and they represent important pinnacles in the development of style in Danish ballet, over the past hundred years.
The Conservatoire, The Lesson and Etudes are performed at Old Stage, November 15. 16. 20. 22. 23. and 27.

Of Another World - Dancing between dream and reality
Festschrift presented to professor emer. Erik Aschengreen
An international anthology about dance as a world of dreams, ideals or paradises lost, a place where identity and reality are put at stake. Through essays, interviews and analytical reflections such diverse subjects are treated as Bournonville's ideal of a critic, Nijinsky's faun versus the romantic dream of elusive women, the broken marriage between music and dance, dancing as an erotic motif in the paintings of the Danish Golden Age, or the beast in dance from Swan Lake to butoh. The book is edited by Inger Damsholt & Monna Dithmer, and the articles are written by Deborah Jovitt, Stephanie Jordan, Ivor Guest, Lena Hammergreen, Nikolaj Hubbe, Dinna Bjørn, Ebbe Mørk, Ole Nørlyng, John Chr. Jørgensen, Inger Damsholt and Monna Dithmer

02.12.01 Diversions of the Royal Danish Ballet - Interviews with the dancers about the Bournonville tradition
New Bournonville book
Dancers are rarely asked when ballettraditions are being discussed. However, the Danish dance writer Anne Middelboe Christensen has interviewed 56 dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet; current principals, experienced character dancers, foreign newcomers. The oldest is 81, the youngest just 19, but they all explain their view upon the Bournonville tradition, their love for Bournonville's ballets and how they see the future of the Danish company which has gone through so much turmoil with five different artistic directors through the 1990s. These interviews are collected by Anne Middelboe Christensen, who is a critic with the Danish newspaper Information and Dance Magazine and lecturer at University of Copenhagen.
The book, which is in Danish but has a summary and an essay in English, offers a guide to the Bournonville ballets and to the artistic directors of the company. It is illustrated by a new collection black&white photographs of some of the dancers interviewed, shot by the Danish photographer Christoffer Regild.
"Hvor danser Den Kongelige Ballet hen - Interview med danserne om Bournonville-traditionen". Published by Schønberg Forlag, 2002, 264 pages. Softbound, Illustrated, ISBN 87-570-1627-5. Price: 279 Danish Kroner.
